3-D Design

This was a fun abstract project that incorporated 3-D design. This was very unlike most art projects I have done and it required me to think outside the box. First, I drew out all the shapes on my watercolor paper and cut them out. The next step was to trace an outline of each shape with a black Sharpie. Then, I drew patterns on each piece in the colors of my choosing. Finally, I cut slits in each piece and pieced them together to form the sculpture.

One change I would make is to give all students the same shapes and show them where to cut the slits so all of the projects have an equal chance of standing up. I felt like it was very difficult to ensure the slits lined up while still balancing the whole sculpture. I would also not require my students to trace each piece as that took a very long time and seemed unnecessary.

Extension: I would integrate this activity with a social-emotional lesson and require students to create patterns on each piece based on their feelings. They could also choose colors that correlate with their feelings as well. This could be a good informal check-in with students to see how they are doing.
