Hidden Safari Project
Description: To create this hidden safari project, I first started by drawing the hidden animal upside down with a blue colored pencil. Once my drawing was complete, I began the next layer of the project which was to draw patterns in different warm colors in order to hide the drawn animal. I used multiple hues of reds, oranges, and yellows. This was a difficult step for me because I drew my animal too boldly and it was hard to cover it up completely. It took many layers of drawing circles, squiggles, squares, variations of lines, etc.
The last step of this project is to frame the artwork on red paper to allow for a gallery walk. The next requirement was to create three hints to clue viewers into which animal we drew. Students could then use the glasses we made in class to reveal the "hidden animal." The film we used to make the glasses was pretty cool and something I had never seen or used before. I could see this being a super fun activity for younger elementary children.
Extension Activity: For an upper elementary math class, I could see this activity being tied into a lesson on tessellations. Instead of drawing random shapes/lines/squiggles to cover the hidden animal, you could require students to draw more uniform, geometric shapes that would fit the description of a tessellation.
